An arc fault circuit interrupter (AFCI) is a circuit breaker designed to prevent fires by detecting non-working electrical arcs and disconnect power before the arc starts a fire. The AFCI should distinguish between a working arc that may occur in the brushes of a vacuum sweeper, light switch, or other household devices and a non-working arc that can occur, for instance, in a lamp cord that has a broken conductor in the cord from overuse. Arc faults in a home is one of the leading causes for household fires.
AFCIs resemble a GFCI/RCD (Ground-Fault Circuit Interrupt/Residual-Current Device) in that they both have a test button, though it is important to distinguish between the two. GFCIs are designed to protect against electrical shock, while AFCIs are primarily designed to protect against fire.
P.S.S. electrical outlets can do little or no damage, or they can KILL you! however, if there is a serious situation (i.e. cardiac failure) it will happen immediately. SO, dear friends, GET SOME OUTLET COVERS and WATCH your kids! take it from slacker mom...

Yeah...what exactly happened? Sounds like there's always an adventure over there with the boys!
he stuck the mail keys (plural) into a socket in the hall. the arc circuit interrupter turned the power off in the bedrooms (why not the hall you ask? i wonder the SAME thing!!). parker said he heard a big "zzzzz" noise in the hall. all i heard was a bonk and tj screaming hysterically and crawling off like a bat out of somewhere really dark, and really hot. his little fingers were covered in soot, as were the keys. he was complaining of a tummy ache after-kinda freaked me out-i told ben when he called and he said to "hang up and call 911", so i did! he is fine other than a small and pretty insignificant burn. the fireman said he once saw a boy that had keys burned into his hand. he said "this proves that the arc cir. int. works!" they were super nice and let the boys climb on the truck and gave them hats.
holy shocking news, batman! That is so scary! Glad all is well...hopefully, lesson learned. But if they're like my kids (and even me, on occassion), it may happen again, huh?
oh my, wow now that's quite the story. Eek!! Off to get covers today for sure.
I'm so glad everyone and everything is alright! I would have bet $$ that all my outlets were covered until I walked around last night! Wrong!

oh nikki. i couldn't read this post fast enough. that is one of my biggest fears ever. in fact. after i painted i thought of plugging in those little caps. never did. i think i will now. boys are just crazy for getting into everything. keaton and carter. i have threatened to death about this very thing. i am so sorry. and ahem...you are not a bad mom. i am sure you really wanted to hurt him/love him at the same time. thank you for posting this.
We have the interrupter as well-good to know it works. Hopefully ours does anyway. Better get some of those covers so we don't have to find out if they work or not. Glad he is ok--scary!
Holy Crap! That would scare me to death!!! What a nightmare huh! I am so glad that all is well and Tanner is ok. I can look around my house and hello I see 3 plugs out and I am a daycare provider. Thanks for sharing-looks like we all need reminders. :) Oh and I echo the same message as others. You are an terrific mom Niki!!!
